Philips DTR220 - Ultra Compact Digital Freeview Set Top Box

Philips DTR220 - Ultra Compact Digital Freeview Set Top Box
Customer Review: Why do all Digital Boxes seem to have problems?
This one is better than the previous PACE box I had, for some reason that needed to warm up before being usable and froze up and crashed all the time.
When this Phillips box works it’s excellent - BUT occasionally the on screen graphics (telling you info about the programme etc) completely corrupt and become little green meaningless blobs. Turning the unit off and on clears this though.
Also, and this one is bizarre. Occasionally when a BBC2 show is broadcast the screen goes black and all I get is sound. When the next programme starts, the picture comes back. Only affects BBC2 (so far). Annoyingly this problem is not sorted by switching off and on.
From what I’ve heard most Digi boxes have numerous glitches so I should be grateful this only has some minor ones. I do wander though if such a thing as a fault free Digi Box exists.
Customer Review: Aggravating on turn on and no better than any other freeview box
I accept that alot of the problems with this are down to the lack of an outdoor aerial but it isn’t any better than the cheap box I had before and alot more annoying due to it going through a loading screen when you turn it on rather than just going straight to the channel it was on when turned off. The epg etc is clear and set up easy but that palaver when you turn it on (which no other box I’ve ever had has done - and I have had a few, believe me) is just annoying, as is the big updated firmware announcement box that comes up after it has done an update and which shows in anything you may have been recording at the time. The box is attractive to look at, and lovely and small, but that doesn’t make any difference to the performance of it. I found that it isn’t any better than the previous box I had even though I also spent ?30 on a better aerial. Sorry, until the broadcasters do something about sending a decent flaming signal out none of these damn boxes will be that good. I know someone who had to change their rooftop aerial because their box didn’t like the one they had so even some rooftop aerials don’t do the job. Just buy the cheapest one you can get and you’ll probably get just as good as this - or any other one.

APPLE REMOTE NS
Used Price: ?12.99
Customer Review: Nice remote, just a couple of downfalls.
I’ve been using an Apple remote since I got my Macbook Pro, and I’m on the whole impressed. The range is pretty good, and the strength (or whatever you want to call it) is excellent - you can point it any which way and it’ll still recieve the signal. It’s lightweight and fits nicely in your hand, too. I like the tactile buttons aswell. That’s not to say that there aren’t a few issues. I’m not impressed with the shiny white plastic, for example. It gets scratched very easily, and after a few days use starts feeling greasy. The one thing that I really dislike is the lack of storage on the Macbook Pro its self. On the iMac, Apple included a little magnetic bit where your remote can sit. Surely it would have been sensible to include somewhere for the remote to sit, or even shorten it a tad so it fits into the express card slot. As a consequence, I’m about to order my 2nd remote in the 10 days that I’ve owned a Mac. But hey, atleast they’re cheap :p If you’re buying it for frontrow, the chances are that you’ll have already used one… and lost it, in which case it’s really up to you. If you think you’re going to loose it again, you might be beter off with something like a “Sik Rex” (it’s a product, honest) but don’t expect the nice design or tactile buttons. If bought a Mac without a remote (I’m assuming from eBay or something), it’s worth the ?15. Particularly if you’ve got an iMac or a Mac Mini. If you’re buying this for an iPod, don’t expect the menu button to work. That just about sums it up. Me? I’m about to order my 2nd. Despite the lack of storage, I think it’s the nicest one around.
Customer Review: Excellent Remote Control
I love the Apple Remote. It totally redefines what a remote control should look and feel like. It’s very small, it’s light, it fits nicely in the hand, it works in all directions, and it’s very simple to use. You can use it to control Apple MacBooks, Apple iMacs, Apple iPod Universal Docks, and Apple TVs, which is pretty clever when you consider it only has 6 buttons. But the thing that I like most about the Apple Remote is that, because it only has 6 buttons, you don’t need to look at it to use it. Most remote controls have so many buttons, that you keep having to look at them to locate the correct button. For older people that wear reading glasses this can pose a real problem, because they keep having to switch between reading (for remote) and distance (for TV) glasses. But with the Apple Remote this isn’t an issue. It’s very easy to remember where all the buttons are, and it’s so easy to feel them with your thumb that you never need to look at the remote. Excellent.
